Female Hormones
In women the most common cause of hormone symptoms is menopause or perimenopause.
Men and women have the same basic sex hormones, but in different amounts. Both sexes have Estrogen, Testosterone, and Progesterone. Women are predominantly Estrogen, but their levels of Estrogen and Progesterone change during their monthly cycles.
Perimenopause can cause hormone symptoms as early as 10 years prior to the onset of menopause. In younger woman, birth control, thyroid problems or disorders such as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) can cause hormone symptoms. All the above problems can also lead to weight gain.
Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) offers several advantages for women, particularly during menopause and beyond. HRT effectively alleviates common menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness, improving overall comfort and quality of life. Estrogen plays a crucial role in maintaining bone density. HRT can help reduce the risk of osteoporosis and fractures in postmenopausal women by preserving bone strength. HRT may improve skin elasticity and hydration, addressing issues like dryness and thinning that can accompany hormonal changes.
Some studies suggest that HRT may have cardiovascular benefits, particularly when started in early menopause, potentially reducing the risk of heart disease. Some research also indicates that HRT may be associated with a lower risk of colorectal cancer in women. HRT can help alleviate mood swings, anxiety, and depression linked to hormonal changes, contributing to improved emotional well-being.
